Question by Rachel: I want to refinish a wooden outdoor front porch swing and two rocking chairs?
The swing and the rockers are about seven years old. They are still in good shape, the wood has just kind of darkened. When they were brand new, I used Thompson’s Water Sealer with color in it. It’s held up very well but I want them to have a pretty golden brown oak color. How should I go about doing this?

I’ve heard that you can spray Easy Off on the wood furniture on a hot day and that the varnish would peel off that way but that sounds kind of bad. I’d like to know of an easy way to redo the porch furniture. I’m just wondering if I will have to sand them down and stain and polyurethane them or if I can skip some of the sanding?

That’s alot of sanding. I wouldn’t do the easy off though, I’m concerned about the affects on your skin even after staining and sealing. I recommend pressure washing the set and allow it to dry a few days to dry afterwards. Then sand lightly. I know that you can rent a pressure washer from Home Depot for about 35.00 for 4 hours. Be careful which valve you use, you don’t want to gouge the wood.Your furniture set is probably built out of pine, which is soft wood. Do you know for sure what type of wood that the set is built out of? Explain to the sales rep at Home Depot what you are doing, they should be able to tell you which tip to use on the pressure washer. This will be the quickest and simplest form of cleaning the old varnish off. You will still need to sand to even out all of the areas and to remove the old stain and varnish.

The first hanging porch swing I ever remember was the one my Grandparents had on their front porch. It was the classic swing. I think it was probably made out of cedar or redwood and hung from chains that were attached to the porch rafters. I guess what makes the swing memorable for me are the experiences I remember having there with loved ones. Maybe that is the allure that many have for porch swings. There is just something about them that reminds us of good times. Or maybe it is the promise of good times to come that makes a hanging porch swing such a fixture in many of our lives. Regardless, there is a swing out there to satisfy everyone’s preference.

A few weeks ago I decided that I wanted to get a hanging porch swing. I started looking around and found out that there are some wonderful options. For those who prefer to avoid having any maintenance tasks that are often associated with wooden products, there are poly resin swings. These are not as attractive, in my opinion, but they are certainly functional and do not require any sanding or staining. For those who prefer a more rustic approach, cedar and teak are very popular choices. These don’t really have to be sanded or restrained unless you wanted to. Another option is the bulkier looking, but also very popular, log style swings. These certainly have their place, but just not on my porch. I prefer a smaller looking wooden swing. If I were looking for a hanging porch swing for a mountain cabin or something I would probably like the log style more.

One of my favorite swings, that is both attractive and popular, is the hanging porch swing by Old Adirondack. This swing is classic in design and yet has a touch of rustic flair. Even though it is made out of wood, the seat is actually contoured so the swing is more comfortable. Like all natural cedar wood, when left outdoors it gets a nice weathered silver gray finish. I have a wicker couch and coffee table on my covered patio that I bought used 2 months ago and it is already showing signs of mold in between the wicker! Is my set destined to be ruined or is there something I can do to get the mold off and /or something I can treat the wicker with to prevent more mold from spreading?

To get the mold off, you can try filling a spray bottle with pure bleach and spritzing an inconspicuous area first. If there is no color fading, go ahold and spray the moldy areas. This should kill the mold. As for preventing it, maybe a shellack?
