The swing and the rockers are about seven years old. They are still in good shape, the wood has just kind of darkened. When they were brand new, I used Thompson’s Water Sealer with color in it. It’s held up very well but I want them to have a pretty golden brown oak color. How should I go about doing this?
I’ve heard that you can spray Easy Off on the wood furniture on a hot day and that the varnish would peel off that way but that sounds kind of bad. I’d like to know of an easy way to redo the porch furniture. I’m just wondering if I will have to sand them down and stain and polyurethane them or if I can skip some of the sanding?
How complicated is this job going to be for me?

That’s alot of sanding. I wouldn’t do the easy off though, I’m concerned about the affects on your skin even after staining and sealing. I recommend pressure washing the set and allow it to dry a few days to dry afterwards. Then sand lightly. I know that you can rent a pressure washer from Home Depot for about 35.00 for 4 hours. Be careful which valve you use, you don’t want to gouge the wood.Your furniture set is probably built out of pine, which is soft wood. Do you know for sure what type of wood that the set is built out of? Explain to the sales rep at Home Depot what you are doing, they should be able to tell you which tip to use on the pressure washer. This will be the quickest and simplest form of cleaning the old varnish off. You will still need to sand to even out all of the areas and to remove the old stain and varnish.

I have a wicker couch and coffee table on my covered patio that I bought used 2 months ago and it is already showing signs of mold in between the wicker! Is my set destined to be ruined or is there something I can do to get the mold off and /or something I can treat the wicker with to prevent more mold from spreading?

To get the mold off, you can try filling a spray bottle with pure bleach and spritzing an inconspicuous area first. If there is no color fading, go ahold and spray the moldy areas. This should kill the mold. As for preventing it, maybe a shellack?

Hello,
I got some patio chairs that were on display at the store.
They are iron with black paint.
They have some serious scrapes on them, and the paint is scratched off in some spots.
I’m assuming spray painting these chairs would be the best means of painting.
Should I use a primer?
Any recommendations or tricks when choosing a type of paint?
It will be in rainy weather often.

spot prime with metal primer (spray or brush) then brush on a coat of good quality exterior Alkyd paint

I am looking for a well made bistro style metal patio set that won’t blow over in the wind, I have heard the $ 99 specials are made of tube cast aluminum and is easily blown over anybody that has a sturdy patio set that doesn’t blow over in the wind and didn’t cost several thousand dollars please help me by letting me know where you got it apprx how much it will or should cost also about how much should the set weigh not to blow over. The $ 99 ones all weight about 30lbs that is only about 10lbs per piece seems too light.

My suggestion is to find an old one. The old phrase, “they don’t make them like they used to” certainly applies here.
I’m thinking an old cast iron table and matching chairs. From the overstock site in my sources: “Choose cast iron if you don’t want the patio furniture blowing across the yard during a storm.” Look at consignment shops and garage sales for the originals or I found one at Walmart, go figure. Not sure how the weight of the new vs. old compares. In general, look for solid materials and sturdy connections (welds are better and more expensive than bolts) – they indicate a quality product.
If you really need to save money, I think you’d have more luck with trying to weigh down a lightweight set. A table tied to a concrete block or a bucket of concrete won’t be going anywhere! Or to be really cheap, put your chairs or something else heavy on top of the table if you know it’s going to storm.

Go on ebay and see what similar items are selling for…remember ebay is 1/4 of retail price and then go onto craigslist and list it there. Ads are free and you can have it sold locally so they pick it up from you and you won’t have to ship it.
